ROGERIAN STYLE OUTLINE: (may vary due to the length of your essay… each section shown here can include many more points and supporting details/evidence)
I. Introduction: This should be a detailed definition of the exigence and rhetorical situation.
II. The body of the paper begins with a classification and division of Side A and Side B.
A. This introduces the con position of the debate. (OPPOSITION)
1. This should be the first major issue to support the ‘opposing side’
a. This is a minor detail supporting number '1'.
b. This is a second minor detail supporting number '1'.
2. This is the second major detail to support the ‘opposing side’
a. This is a minor detail supporting number '2'.
b. This is a second minor detail supporting number '2'.
etc.
B. This introduces the ‘proposition’ of the debate. (YOUR SIDE)
1. This should be the first major issue to support the ‘pro side’
a. This is a minor detail supporting number '1'.
b. This is a second minor detail supporting number '1'.
2. This is the second major detail to support the ‘pro side’
c. This is a minor detail supporting number '2'.
d. This is a second minor detail supporting number '2'.
etc.
C. This particular section compares and contrasts the issues in order
to highlight the differences between the pro and opposing position (can use the
information from the two sides in the sections above)
1. This might begin with a sentence stating a pro position.
2. The following might point out a con position.
3. The next point might refute a previous claim.
4. The next point might restate a position.
III. Drawing a conclusion.

ENG 105 - Exploratory Essay
Please see the following guidelines for creating an Exploratory Essay. Also see the resources provided by The OWL at Purdue here.
Outline
Paragraph 1 A brief, GENERAL, introduction of the topic. Explain why there is a debate or controversy.
Paragraph 2 The RHETORICAL SITUATION – who is interested in the issue, exigence and constraints.
Paragraph 3 One point of view you have discovered in your readings….. explain this point of view in Your own words. Give credit to the source where you found the perspective.
Paragraph 4 Another, DIFFERENT point of view on the issue. explain this point of view in your own words. Give credit to the source where you found the perspective.
Paragraph 5 Yet, another, 3rd point of view on the issue. explain this point of view in your own words. Give credit to the source where you found the perspective.
Paragraph 6 *Tell why you are interested in the issue/topic. *State your personal exigence. *State your claim (working thesis) for the final project. ***** this is the ONLY part of the essay where your opinion should be expressed!
Guidelines
Step 1 Find 3 sources that have at least 3 DIFFERENT perspectives/points of view on your topic. Do this first so that you are educated and informed about the different points of view relating to your topic.
Step 2 Write a short, 1 paragraph summary for each source; in your own words). If you can write a summary for each point of view, then it means you understand them. And there is no need to quote in this essay. Use your own writing style to express the 3 points of view.
Step 2a Edit/revise your summaries…. These are the body paragraphs of this essay. There should be at least 1 paragraph for each perspective; more if needed. Each body paragraph should explain a new point of view only (DON’T state your opinion).
Step 3 Write the second section of your essay: The Rhetorical Situation. Remember this is the part that shows the reader WHY there is a debatable issue in the world, community, etc….. Also remember for this essay not all 5 parts of rhetorical situation are used. Only 3 parts: Interested parties, constraints and exigence.
Step 4 Write your introduction paragraph. It should be a very general explanation of the issue being discussed. NO CLAIM or OPINION should be stated here; only a general description.
Step 5 Write the last paragraph which includes * your personal exigence * your claim/thesis for final project (it is ONLY here that you can show your opinion on the final topic) Combine all parts for one, solid EXPLORATORY ESSAY

Toulminian Argument Prompts
In an effort to conserve time, I would like you to start working on a Toulmin Outline and then the Final Toulmin Essay working from one of the following questions:
1. In light of the spate of gun violence gripping the territory, do we need stricter handgun control laws and punishments for their violation to save lives?
2. Should the wealthiest citizens be required by the state to share their wealth with those in need by providing health, food, and education through higher taxation? Or is it the responsibility of those with less to find ways to look after their own?
3. In many instances, cigarettes and liquor are cheaper in the BVI than in the countries they are manufactured. Should the government impose 'sin taxes' on alcohol and tobacco in order to subsidize increasing costs for health care and health infrastructure?
4. Our government mandates that we all use its service (BVI Electricity Corporation) as our primary source of power. Is this fair? What are the benefits and disadvantages of this arrangement? Please research the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation Act in order to fully grasp the extent of the mandate.
5. If a policeman finds something that he was not looking for (e.g. narcotics in a car that was being searched for guns), why should or shouldn't the policeman have the right to take the accused into custody? Research "reasonable suspicion" in your response.
Remember the parts of the Toulmin Argument. I need to see clearly: your claims, your support, and your warrants in the outline. If necessary, the backing, rebuttal, and qualifier should be included. Appropriate research should be done for your topic. Please see me if you need advice or assistance evaluating sources.
This Outline and Draft should be emailed to me by Friday 12th March, 2010. You are expected to follow the Outline that follows (You will receive a sample Toulminian Outline via Google Docs). In that class I will collect and review with the intention of final Toulmin essays being submitted on Monday 22nd March, 2010.

II. Claim
i. First establish credibility with the audience by stating the support you have for your position.
ii. Introduce qualifiers where necessary to diffuse challenges (typically, usually, for the most part, some, several, few, sometimes etc.) Never use absolutes or totalities in your claim. It should be clear to the reader what types of claim you are making.
1-2 paragraphs
III. Support
i. The specific support that you mentioned previously should be presented in whole.
ii. Introduce appropriate appeals here.
2-3 paragraphs
IV. Warrants
i. Remember here you are connecting the claims to the support.
ii. These can be beliefs that are taken for granted, the assumptions that underline your argument, or specific cultural and personal experiences or observations.
2-3 paragraphs
V. Concessions/Rebuttals
i. Here you either concede that an opposing viewpoint is valid or show where they may question your support or backing
ii. Discredit if possible the opposition's counterarguments.
ii. End essay positively affirming your position.

ENG 105 - Final Projects Due Dates URGENT
All students must submit a complete draft of their final research argument (3000 words) to me digitally at rwgeorges@hlscc.edu.vg by Thursday 7th May at 6 pm. NO EXCEPTIONS. In order to submit a draft to me you MUST have seen me prior to Thursday.
Your final research argument will be submitted with the required forms and PROVIDED COVER SHEET at the meeting time scheduled on the Final Exam Schedule when it is released. You will receive the required forms, cover sheet, and rubric for the Oral Presentations at your individual meeting the week of May 4-8.
I cannot guarantee comments on anything submitted after May 7th for review. If you have not met with me yet regarding your final research argument, do so immediately.
