ENG 107 - Poetry Question

Answer one of the following:

I
Analyze how the passage of time is explored in terms of love in two poems that you have read. How have these poets used time to communicate their ideas?
Note: Several of the poems we have read are applicable here. Themes that are closely related to the passage of time should be explored as well. You are expected to clearly illustrate your points with relevant quotations and presentation of evidence from the poems themselves.
or

II
Speaker and tone are almost impossible to separate. In poems with clear narrative voices, we are able to determine (or decipher when necessary) the tone of the piece through that voice. Select three or more poems by one poet and examine how he/she conveys tone in the respective poems.

In addition to your response to your selected question (at least 3 pages), it is expected that you will provide a source separate from the stories and authors selected. Start your research on all facets of your chosen question as soon as possible. If you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.

Self-Governance set to be suspended in the Turks and Caicos

It is only Tuesday morning, but there is another revelation this week that has relevance for the BVI. Self governance is set to be suspended in the Turks and Caicos. Read the preliminary BBC report here, and the follow-up report in The Nassau Guardian here.

Following allegations of corruption, an investigation decided that there was sufficient evidence of systematic corruption and amoral political behaviour in the British Overseas Territory. The recommendation now is to suspend large parts of the Turks and Caicos constitution for a period of at least two years.

The territory would forfeit its right to have a Cabinet, ministries, or control of its finances. Those rights and privileges would revert to the Crown, who would then allow the Governor to act in its stead.

If the UK is showing its willingness to step in and seize control of an Overseas Territory when it deems necessary, what are the implications for the BVI in your opinion?

ENG 105 - German Company Seeking Bailout Tied to Auschwitz

Here's an article of interest. All of us should be paying attention of course to the global financial crisis, especially in terms of large corporations that are desperate for their governments to bail them out in order to save their existence - and therefore thousands of jobs.

An industrial corporation in Germany, The Schaeffler Group, has recently had their bailout request rejected by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It seems they were the architects of an ambitious hostile takeover shortly before the markets crashing last year. In the aftermath of this news, there are now allegations of the Group's profiting directly from the gassing of Jews at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

While no doubt an extreme case, this is arguably an example of the irresponsible behaviour of global corporations and their roles in the current crisis. How do we feel ethically about their demands for bailouts and assistance to save their operations? Regardless of your response to that first question, are the threats of astronomical job loss and further economic recession ransoming us to accept these bailouts as necessary evil? Lastly, what about the Schaeffler Group? If these allegations are true, what kinds of penalties are appropriate? Must we hold Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler accountable to the sins of her fore bearers?
