Twelfth Night Essay Question

Answer one of the following:

I
Twelfth Night is January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany or the end of Christmas festivities in Elizabethan England. The play’s alternate title, What You Will is a reference to the decadent parties that were thrown where partygoers were allowed to do “what [they] will.” Puritanical law was ignored and revelry in the festivities encouraged. Drunkenness, self-indulgent behavior, and a general perversion of social norms were the norm.

Given the background of the play, observe closely the role of Malvolio as a symbol of puritanical Christian law through the five acts. In this vein, pay particular attention to both his changing moods and how he is treated by the other characters.

or

II
Love undoubtedly is one of the major themes of Twelfth Night. However, none of the relationships that develop over the course of this play can be considered normal. Evaluate each of the major relationships in terms of ‘genuine’ love.

or

III
A famous quote from Hamlet is ‘frailty thy name is woman.’ In Twelfth Night, Viola says ‘Alas, our frailty is the cause, not we.’ Examine the female characters in the play and their subversion of expected female roles in Elizabethan society.

or

IV
A primary theme of Twelfth Night is mistaken identity. Observe how identity (whether true or as a disguise) is defined by the clothes, speech, and behavior of the characters in the play.

ENG 105 - Dr. Martin Luther King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail

One of the main theories behind Rogerian Logic is that emotions, insults, and the like must all be defused before addressing the issue at hand. In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. responds 'above the fray' of the insults and disparaging claims about his character and his cause. Dr. King was responding to a letter written to him by a number of clerics in the Birmingham and Alabama areas requesting that he cancel the protests, sit-ins, and marches that were being organised and carried out during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

Dr. King wrote them this response on toilet paper, newspaper margins, and other bits of paper he could salvage from his cell in a Birmingham jail. He, of course, had been arrested for the role he played in these same protests. I have included the posting of speaker Tim Ferris who gives a little exigence, and includes the original editorial letter calling on King to cease the protests.

Pay particular attention to how King seeks to defuse all the emotions of his detractors and cooly put forth his argument while attempting to show that his conclusions stem from some of the same values that his detractors say they espouse.

Scott Berkun - How to Stay Motivated

College students especially must find ways to stay motivated through the completion of their degrees in order to perform to the maximum of their capabilities. Writer, blogger, and speaker Scott Berkun explores some methods we can use to get motivated and sustain it through to the end of a task.

"All great tasks test our motivation. It’s easy to court ideas over beers and change the world with napkin sketches, but like most things taken home from bars, new challenges arise the next day. It’s in the morning light when work begins, and grand ideas (or barroom conquests) lose their luster. To do interesting things requires work and it’s no surprise we abandon demanding passions for simpler, easier, more predictable things."

Self-Governance set to be suspended in the Turks and Caicos

It is only Tuesday morning, but there is another revelation this week that has relevance for the BVI. Self governance is set to be suspended in the Turks and Caicos. Read the preliminary BBC report here, and the follow-up report in The Nassau Guardian here.

Following allegations of corruption, an investigation decided that there was sufficient evidence of systematic corruption and amoral political behaviour in the British Overseas Territory. The recommendation now is to suspend large parts of the Turks and Caicos constitution for a period of at least two years.

The territory would forfeit its right to have a Cabinet, ministries, or control of its finances. Those rights and privileges would revert to the Crown, who would then allow the Governor to act in its stead.

If the UK is showing its willingness to step in and seize control of an Overseas Territory when it deems necessary, what are the implications for the BVI in your opinion?

ENG 105 - German Company Seeking Bailout Tied to Auschwitz

Here's an article of interest. All of us should be paying attention of course to the global financial crisis, especially in terms of large corporations that are desperate for their governments to bail them out in order to save their existence - and therefore thousands of jobs.

An industrial corporation in Germany, The Schaeffler Group, has recently had their bailout request rejected by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It seems they were the architects of an ambitious hostile takeover shortly before the markets crashing last year. In the aftermath of this news, there are now allegations of the Group's profiting directly from the gassing of Jews at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

While no doubt an extreme case, this is arguably an example of the irresponsible behaviour of global corporations and their roles in the current crisis. How do we feel ethically about their demands for bailouts and assistance to save their operations? Regardless of your response to that first question, are the threats of astronomical job loss and further economic recession ransoming us to accept these bailouts as necessary evil? Lastly, what about the Schaeffler Group? If these allegations are true, what kinds of penalties are appropriate? Must we hold Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler accountable to the sins of her fore bearers?

ENG 104 - Narration

Write a narrative (about 500 words long) about an experience similar to one of the following prompts:

1. Because you have been sick, out of town, busy at work, or working on other homework, you didn't have as much time to study for an important test as you needed. Everyone going to school has been in this situation. Think of a specific test that you took that you felt unprepared for and narrate the events. Tell your readers about the preparation that you were able to do, the reasons that you didn't get to prepare as well as you wanted, taking the test, and any significant events that happened after you took the test. Your paper should help readers understand what it felt like to be unprepared.

2. Choose a vivid time from your childhood — You might think of the first time that you rode a school bus, of a time when you went to the principal's office, the first A you earned on a test or paper, earning money to buy something that you really wanted, and so on. Narrate the events related to the childhood memory that you've chosen so that your readers will understand why the event was important and memorable.

3. Teaching someone else how to do something can be rewarding. Think of a skill that you've taught someone else how to do. Perhaps you taught someone else how to swim, showed someone how to bake a souffle, or helped someone learn how to study more effectively. Think about the events that made up the process of teaching the skill, and narrate the story for your readers.

4. Every place has things that change — sometimes as the result of economics, sometimes because different people are involved, and sometimes for no clear reason that you know about. Think of a change to a place that you know well. Perhaps the local grocery store you grew up with as Smith and Bros. Grocery was bought out by a regional chain like Food Lion or Winn Dixie. Maybe the First National Bank of Smithburg suddenly becomes NationsBank. Perhaps the change was more personal -- an older sibling moves out of the house and your family changes the room to a guest room or an office. Think of a specific change and narrate the events that occurred. Readers should know the details of the change, and they should know how you feel about the changes that occurred.

5. Choose a time when you did something that took a lot of nerve, a time when you didn't follow the crowd or a time when you stood up for your beliefs. Perhaps your friends were urging you to do something that you were uncomfortable with and you chose not to cave into peer pressure. Maybe you took a stance on a political issue that was important in your community, or you might have Whatever you choose, think about the details of the event and write a story that tells about what happened. Your narrative should show your readers why you decided to make a stand or try something that took nerve, give specifics on the events, and share how you felt after the event.

These prompts are taken from: http://tengrrl.com/tens/019.shtml

Please bring these in ASAP for me to help you edit and revise them. The final assignment is due on Wednesday 25th February (104 A), and Thursday 26th February (104 F).

ENG 105 - Debate Rules, Rubric, and Etiquette

So folks, we should be preparing for the debate on Monday.
"Is the cause of crime social or individual?"

I will adjust the format of the debate for the future to ensure that it is more reflective of participation and contribution from non-debating group members. This may be done by making smaller groups for the next one. Both selected members must have an equal presentation load.

The format that we shall be employing is as follows:

Opening Statement - Each team shall begin with a 3-5 minute opening statement about the rhetorical situation. There is no restriction on the creativity of the format used. However, the main claim must be introduced, as well as the line of reasoning (for eg. syllogistic argument based on premises).

Presentation of Support - Each team will provide support for the main claim through supporting claims and specific evidence. This should be given in two to three minutes. Each team will have two opportunities to present support.

Questions and Answers - Debate teams must be prepared to respond to questions from the audience. Approx. five minutes.

Counterargument - Each team will directly respond to a claim made by their opponents to either refute, concede, or qualify their own argument. Where refutations are attempted, direct evidence is expected in order to disprove the opponent. A minute conference will be allowed before the counterarguments begin. Two minutes will be allowed for teams to make their counterarguments.

Debate Etiquette:
No put downs or insults
Raise your hand during the Q&A session
Interruptions from a member of your team will cost your team 1 point
Whispering or talking while someone has the floor will cost your team 1 point

what's the difference between 'diabolic' and 'diabolical'?

English is quite the language. 'Diabolic' and 'diabolical' are used interchangeably daily, so why do we have two different adjectives with the same root and the same meaning? The answer is simple: they do not have the same meaning.

The definitions we will find in the dictionary for 'diabolic' are: having the qualities of a devil; devilish; fiendish; outrageously wicked: a diabolic plot. Or: pertaining to or actuated by a devil.
The definition for 'diabolical': Of, concerning, or characteristic of the devil; satanic. Or: Appropriate to a devil, especially in degree of wickedness or cruelty.

Also, if we take a more etymological approach (consider the origin), we will look at the -al ending a bit more closely. The -al ending is a holdover from the Latin ending -alis, - meaning 'of, relating to, characterised by, pertaining to, like'. In this light, 'diabolic' has a more direct connection to the qualities or wickedness of a devil (as we see in the definition given). 'Diabolical' however, simply seeks to judges the noun as being 'devil-like'.
With this understanding, calling someone 'diabolic' is just that much worse than calling them 'diabolical'.

Let me know if you would like me to include more tips and trivia like this on the blog in the future.

It's Spring 2009, and thanks to an effort in the Humanities Department of HLSCC, you are here at the blog of your lecturer- me! The courses I am teaching this semester are English Composition I, English Composition II, Elements of Literature, and Shakespeare. I plan on using this blog, along with Sharepoint and some elements of SONIS as a measure of both class participation and the commitment of individuals to the material we are covering.

I will ask that you visit all these online arenas regularly as I will be posting material that will only be accessible on them in the interest of both being economically and environmentally responsible, and encouraging the integration of the technology available into my instruction.

Work hard this semester and remember: Focus on what it is you need to do in order to get where it is you need to be.
